Today we’d like to introduce you to Denise Henke.
Denise, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Originally from Naperville, IL, I have accumulated 32 years of experience in Corporate America as a Senior Program Manager. My career has focused on implementing Microsoft Software solutions for major organizations, including Hershey’s, the Dallas Cowboys, and Lids.
In 2014, seeking greater meaning, I wrote “The Beyond Series,” a romance inspired by my best friend’s death in 1993. The story follows my character as she is guided toward her destiny by signs from him, suggesting fate rather than coincidence. Writing the series was both cathartic and healing, helping me express grief and honor our friendship.
Shortly after I published the books, my father was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease. Our family navigated challenging circumstances during this period, including the impact of Covid, which ultimately led to him living with me throughout his final year as he battled the disease. Two months following his passing, my mother’s health began to decline. She experienced recurring hospitalizations over two years before she too passed away. Both parents were cared for in my home by my sister and me until their passing. Providing care for them during this time was the honor of our lifetime.
During my mother’s final year, I searched for a Florida winter rental to escape the Chicago winters. When her health declined, I bought a home in Tampa for us both, but sadly she passed away two days before the move, marking the start of my new journey a solo one.
After losing both parents within two years, I began a new life in Florida, relying on my job for stability. Yet, once things settled, I felt unfulfilled and started searching for purpose in my next chapter. Through a friend’s brother, who is a franchise matchmaker, I explored many options and quickly found “Set the Stage,” which sparked my interest. My project management experience aligned perfectly with the business model, and my passion for home decor made it an ideal fit. Transforming my 1920s bungalow and refurnishing it helped me heal and move forward.
Six months ago, I became an entrepreneur and CEO of “Set the Stage Greater Sarasota St. Pete,” after securing Sarasota and St. Petersburg territories with corporate support for business processes and marketing. My goal is to revitalize these hurricane-impacted communities through thoughtful home staging and furnishing, bringing optimism and style back to local spaces.
Interestingly, my books feature a fictional family-run home design business, echoing my real-life journey. Set the Stage is a national franchise offering expert home staging and furnishing solutions for sellers and vacation rentals. Our team assembles customized packages to boost your home’s appeal and functionality, ensuring client satisfaction with every project.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting a new business comes with challenges, but my project management experience helps me anticipate issues and find solutions. Launching a business involves forming a legal entity, securing funding, and choosing a location, so working with experts is key to ensuring a smooth process.
Thanks for sharing that. Could you tell us a bit about your work?
I enjoy transforming empty spaces by envisioning designs, sourcing decor, and collaborating with people. Relationship building is central to my approach, and each unique project excites me. Seeing homeowners fall in love with their new space is the greatest reward.
I’m an avid fan of HGTV and Food Network, always eager to discover new styles and creative concepts. I thrive on layering textures and designs, and I’m proud of my resilience and optimism. My positivity helps me connect with ideal clients and partners, making every project meaningful.
How do you think about luck?
I don’t believe in coincidences; I think everything happens for a reason, including setbacks, which are learning experiences. It’s important to find supportive people who encourage you through challenges. I believe in positive energy and manifesting goals—being positive has brought me success, and I choose hope over fear.
